Anglo-Zulu War Memorial

cathmemz2.JPG

ERECTED BY THE OFFICERS NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS AND MEN 80TH [STAFFORDSHIRE VOLUNTEERS] REGIMENT WHO SERVED IN SOUTH AFRICA TO THE MEMORY OF THIER COMRADES WHO FELL DURING THE SEKUKUNI & ZULU CAMPAIGNS 1878 - 1879

80th (Staffordshire Volunteer) Regiment, Anglo-Zulu War Memorial, Lichfield Cathedral (photograph courtesy of Tim Needham and the Imperial War Museum)

The wrought iron screen and shields commemorate the men of the 80th (South Staffordshire) Regiment who fell in the Sekukuni and Zulu Campaigns in South Africa, 1878-1879. Set against the railing are five inscribed metal plaques, each in the form of an imitation cow-hide Zulu shield, resembling Zulu weaponry. Four of the plaques list men of the 80th who fell in action in Zululand, whilst the fifth plaque records the names of those who died through other causes (especially disease) during the Zulu and Sekukuni campaigns in South Africa. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the imitation insert strips, giving rank on the left and name on the right, starting with senior officers first.

The first memorial shield plaque lists the officers and men of the 80th (South Staffordshire) Regiment who fell at the Battle of the Ntombe Drift in Zululand on March 12, 1879.

Additional information supplied by Julian Whybra:

The second person named on the first shield, Civil Surgeon Cobbin, was not a serving member of the 80th Regiment. He was a civilian in the Army Medical Department and was attached to the 80th Regiment for the duration of the war.

In total 46 men died of disease during the regiment’s tour of duty. Whilst the fifth memorial shield records the names of 17 men who died through other causes (disease especially) during the Zulu and Sekukuni campaigns in South Africa, Julian’s research has identified the names of 29 other men who served during that tour of duty by the 80th Regiment. 14 of the men died of disease whilst on active service, and were therefore awarded the South Africa Medal; 15 others died of disease when they were not engaged on active service, so did not receive the South Africa Medal. The names of those 29 men are listed below:

List A
