Samuel Johnson Birthplace and Museum

Less than four miles from Burntwood in the city of Lichfield is the The Samuel Johnson Birthplace, Museum and Bookshop

Samuel Johnson was born on the 18th September 1709 in his father's house in Breadmarket Street and he spent his first 27 years in the house which overlooks the Market Square.

He frequented The Swan Licenced House in Bird Street.

He moved to London and after many years of writing there, he was offered the major task of compiling a dictionary of the English language. This project brought him fame though little financial reward.
