The Site |
In 1988 the idea was had for an Arboretum and in November 1994 a national appeal was launched by the then Prime Minister John Major. A site was chosen in Alrewas, and in 1997 the owners, Lafarge Aggregates leased the land for a peppercorn rent. The National Lottery in the form of the Millennium Commission granted forty per cent and this was matched by donations. On the 16th May 2001 the National Memorial Arboretum was officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent. In November 2003 The Royal British Legion took over responsibility for the management of the Arboretum |

My Remembrance Day |
|
From its concept it was seen as a place where the lives of people would be remembered by living trees. The Arboretum, which consists of 150 acres of wooded parkland, already has in excess of 50,000 trees. It is a living and lasting memorial to commemorate and celebrate those who have given their lives in the service of their country, all who have served and those who have suffered as a result of conflict and others who for specific or appropriate reasons are commemorated on the site
